SLEEP DISORDERS AND SYMPTOMATOLOGY AMONG MEDICAL AND NURSING STUDENTS

Abstract
In order to evaluate sleep disorders and symptomatology of anxiety and depression in relatively normal group of population, author studied and analysed the answers of questions about parameters of sleep disorders, symptomatology, and iYs causes.
The sleep disorder data was also correlated with variety of psychiatric symptoms, sleep paralysis, menstrual cycle, psychiatric, treatment and of "use of pills to sleep" reported by the same group.
The population we studed were nursing (N=202) and medical students (N=212). The results are as follow:
1. About 68% of the total population reported experience of sleep disorder. In type of sleep disorder, about 49% of total population reported "Difficult Falling Asleep" which was the highest in frequency. "Early Morning Awakening" 3.9% was the lowest among the type of sleep disorders.
2. "Nervousness and shakiness inside" (55.1%) was the highest symptomatology of anxiety. In depressive symptoms, "Feeling Rlue" (62.8%) was the highest symptomatology, of anxiety. In discrepancy between the medical and nursing students for this symptom was significant. (P<0.05). About 20% of the total population reported more than one--half of the symptoms of anxiety or depression.
3. In correlation with sleep disorders and symptomatology of anxiety and depression, symptomatolgy were reported with higher proportion in the group of sleep disordered than in nonsleep disordered with significance. (P<0.01).
4. About 32% of the total population reported experience of sleep paralysis which was also higher proportion in the group of sleep disordered than in nonsleep disordered with significance (P<0.01)
5. In the reported causes of sleep disorder, "Environmental Change and Overstimulation" was the highest in frequency (42.9%). Nursing group was higher than medical group in this cause with significance (P<0.01). About one-fourth of all sleep disordered population reported "Emotional disturbances" as the cause.
6. The age of the first experience of sleep disturbance were in range of 16-20 years old and numbered 118 (41.7%). Especally in these ages, more nursing students had experienced sleep disorder than medical students with significance (P<0.05), but more medical students had experienced than nursing students with significance in the ages of 21-25 years (P<0.01).
7. About 2% of the total population reported experience of psychiatric treatment and about 9% of all population reported "use of pills to sleep" which data is very low than foreign reports.
8. About 13% of nursing students reported the correlation of sleep disorder and menstrual cycle.
